Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Rather memorable wood grain toning dashes lazily upward across the obverse, incorporating very well with the dusky lead-grey hue that permeates the entire surface. Evidently, the obverse die was somewhat older than the reverse, as the latter side features consistently sharp details, while the vertical lines of the shield on the obverse feature curious distortion that cumulates with some overall bluntness due to excessive die usages. 1838-O gains notoriety as the only New Orleans "no stars" half-dime.
