Lot Title: 1907 High Relief-Wire Rim PCGS MS-63 CACCAC
Lot Number: 374
Description: Often the target of cleaning or other versions of "improvement", it is always a pleasure to view a seemingly original example of the well-famed and oft-discussed 1907 high-relief double-eagle. PCGS properly calls this a "wire rim" example, although the slab insert tends to disguise the prominence of said artifact, a natural consequence of multiple strikings under high pressure. Brass-gold overall, a good numismatic lamp reveals hints of ruby iridescence within the fields. Also promoting the idea of an original example, a tiny carbon speck rests atop the junction of Liberty's left (observed) shoulder and a nick on the midsection likely plays a role in grade determination. On the reverse, a trivial but lengthy graze travels beneath the eagle's head and neck and a single mark rests near the middle of the wing. Beautifully struck and a pleasure to view at the choice grade level.
