Lot Title: 1849 $5 Oregon Exchange Company NGC AU-53
Lot Number: 416
Description:

Papa's Collection. Kagin-1, R.5. 1 graded AU-53, 4 higher at PCGS. Oregon prospectors comprised a large percentage of the first wave of "49ers" as they poured into nearby California to seek their fortunes. The gold dust and tiny nuggets pulled out of the hills needed a more convenient mode of transport and exchange, hence the creation of the Oregon Exchange Company, which struck $5 and $10 coins from raw gold. A very popular motif for pioneer gold collectors, the beaver shown on this five-dollar example shows acceptable details for the AU grade level, given that these are always erratically struck. Some minor textural details do show in the beaver's hide, and the crude legends have been fairly brought up throughout. The reverse bears a considerable number of tiny contact marks, as is commonly the case for these unalloyed gold coins. Pedigree can be identified for this coin upon discovery of a looping threadlike strikethrough at the bottom of the denomination side.
