Lot Title: 1852 887 $50 U.S. Assay NGC AU-55
Lot Number: 417
Description:

Bradford Pear Collection. 17 graded AU-55, 25 higher at NGC. Sharp and only lightly worn, randomly scattered smaller abrasions are typical for any gold coin of this heft. And as collectors of these large gold pieces know, rims and edges are always especially prone to nicks, with the eight "points" all the more assured of suffering blunt evidence of coin-to-coin contact. Indeed, this example shows some evidence of circulation at every single point , but the effect may be slightly exaggerated, oddly enough, by the encapsulation itself, as it outlines and shadows the edges. Given that the coin actually saw brief circulation (missing mint-state by merely five points according to NGC), the effects of abrasions are understandable and certainly expected. The central portion of the machined design on the reverse shows the most evidence of wear, such that it is, while the obverse really shows scarcely any wear at all, with evidence of such taking the form of slightly muted contact marks. A handful of tiny, dull nicks scattered randomly about the eagle's head, again, impossible to avoid when a gold coin this large makes its way into the channels of commerce.
