Lot Title: 1799/8 S-188 PCGS Good details/bent
Lot Number: 554
Description: Lake James Collection. Sheldon-188 is the 1799/8 overdate, one of two overdates for 1799, the other being non-collectable. Whether collecting by date, by Redbook variety, or by die-marriage, acquisition of a 1799 cent in any grade whatsoever frequently represents the crescendo of one's efforts because it is such a difficult and well-respected entry into the series. PCGS picked one possible proviso as to condition, suggesting the coin has been "bent", although that is not at all apparent within the slab. The surfaces are also very dark, coffee-brown overall and textured as is typical of an example that has seen "environmental effects". Emerging from the upper obverse, LIBERTY can be read with only a little effort, while the date must be discerned with persistence.
