Lot Title: 1855/54 Arrows PCGS PR-62
Lot Number: 873
Description: Zodiac Consignment. 1 graded PR-62, 5 higher at PCGS. Wiley-Bugert-102, one of two die-marriages that struck proof half-dollars in 1855, features the final "5" punched in place of a "4" in the date. Intriguingly, the first "5" also appears to be repunched over ... something, perhaps another "5"? That an 1854 die would have been re-used for proof coinage in 1855 is highly unusual, given the very low emission of proof strikings of the era, and potential bidders are urged to research this phenomenon. As to the coin itself, the surface is notable for rather high brilliance within the fields, despite the rather minor hairlines expected of the grade. Lavender-grey and iron patina blankets much of the surface, relieved in areas by delicate orange highlights, but underlying brilliance is not in the least diminished. Outstanding production quality extracted virtually maximum detail from Gobrecht's essential design, leaving perhaps just two brief strands of Liberty's hair not-quite-perfectly delineated.
