Lot Number: 872
Description: Zodiac Consignment. Ex-NGC "Richmond Collection" 1716024-033, same grade. 4 graded PR-63, 5 higher at NGC. Definitely prettier than what one might assume of the assigned "choice" grade, a distinctive arc of blazing aqua-cobalt toning lines the obverse upper left margin, with the balance of this side showing the classic "1840s proof coinage" brilliance that becomes recognizable upon first glance to collectors. On the reverse, a significant portion of the surface has become thoroughly doused in gleaming pumpkin-gold, surrounded by additional, deeply saturated ocean-blue color. The production quality for this specific half-dollar surpasses that of most proofs of the era seen by the cataloger in that the extremely fine details have been unusually well enunciated by the dies. There is not even a hint of weakness in the two parallel ascending curl lines as is usually seen, and numerous intriguing die-polish lines within the reflective background of the shield shine through. No official mintage was recorded by Philadelphia for proof half-dollars of the era, but it surelyannot have been more than a dozen or so pieces, an assumption supported by the resubmission-inflated population reports of the two services.
