Lot Title: 1801 PCGS XF-45
Lot Number: 250
Description: MAGA Collection. Bass-Dannreuther-1 is an R.5 variety, much rarer as a die-marriage than BD-2, and easily identified by the die-crack snaking upward between "01" in the date. For the type collector, 1801 often ends up being the best choice for the "capped bust, right" gold eagle since it boasts the highest mintage (44,344) in the series. That said, it probably ranks second to 1799 in terms of availability due to survival rate. All of these consideration are overridden, however, by the appeal BD-1 will have to die specialists who are aware of its rarity.

Examination of the brassy, slightly dusky surface reveals faint, wispy hairlines that absolutely do not detract in any way. Indeed, the obverse is remarkably free from contact and the cataloger can find nothing on that side to serve as a pedigree marker. Turning to the reverse, it doesn't take long to locate the single most recognizable characteristic of this specific coin as a lengthy strike-through delves into the stars above the eagle's head. Curious small indented lines beneath this anomaly require mention.
