Lot Title: 1799 Small Stars Obverse PCGS AU-58
Lot Number: 249
Description: MAGA Collection. Bass-Dannreuther-7, R.3 is considered the most available die-marriage of the "small stars, irregular date" 1799 eagle, and can be attributed by noting the brief space between the first star and neighboring curl, the high second "9", and by noting the way an arrowhead stands just right of the left base of "N" in UNITED on the reverse. The inherent expense of acquiring any early eagle in mint condition leads many collectors to pursue a finer example in better about-uncirculated grades because the "bang for the buck" return is quite redeeming by comparison to the precocious cost of even an MS-61 example. Furthermore, for type purposes, the 1799 BD-7 is an excellent choice given its availability relative to other rare varieties.

PCGS nailed the technical grade at AU-58, which accurately conveys full mint luster, and what seems to be a truly unworn, fully featured surface. A terrific impression appears to have been taken off of fresh dies, as there are some definite indications of semi-prooflike character, including wonderful flashy fields and hints of cameo expression. (Later die-states of this same die-marriage show pronounced die cracks, which also leads to the notion of fresh dies for this specimen.) The only way this example misses an uncirculated designation is by way of a handful (or fewer) of lengthy linear abrasions and a number of minor contact marks within the wide expanses of the field. The combination of aggregate effect is that of brief commercial exposure. Nevertheless, the prudent collector will find the consistent, dandelion-gold color appealing, and some interesting strike-doubling of the obverse presents an additional attraction. No prominent adjustment marks can be located.
