Description: MAGA Collection. Bass-Dannreuther-3 (R.4). A single obverse die struck all 1803 gold eagles, so the reverse must be examined, and once observers note the extremely close proximity between the eagle's beak and the star just below, attribution has been confirmed. The cataloger supposes this to be an example struck off of early dies, perhaps die-state "a", because there is no evidence of a die clash on the obverse (such as is seen on later die-state examples), while the reverse shows a singular clashed hair curl atop the upper left corner of the shield on the reverse. Modest adjustment marks can be located at the obverse extreme left side.

Rich bronzed patina merges with deeper golden tint to provide a strong visual impression of "antique gold" original surfaces, and closer examination reveals even richer, deep golden accents clinging to recessed areas of the design. That being said, there is a curious underlying "glint" that prudent bidders are advised to examine for themselves, specifically (for example) at the space between "S OF" on the reverse, as this is an abraded area with unexpectedly glossy texture. Very slight and very fine permeable surface texture is also noted throughout, and this tends to diminish the possibilities for flowline luster.
