Lot Title: 1807 Bust Left PCGS MS-63 CACCAC
Lot Number: 221
Description: Andy Alderson Collection. 42 graded MS-63, 27 higher at PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther-8 has the same obverse as the much scarcer BD-7, but on the reverse, the point off the tail of one of the arrows greets the extreme right end of the flag on "5" in the denomination. 1807 saw the transition from the "bust right" to "bust left" for the half-eagle series, and many would argue that the latter type, represented here, is the more attractive between the two. What really cannot be argued is the appeal of this butter-gold example as the striking detail and unexpectedly vibrant luster combine to deliver a type coin of alluring charm.

Many collectors prefer to avoid examples which show adjustment marks, and for them, this is an excellent candidate as none are to be found. Further examination reveals remnants of some sort of encrustation that has been carefully and professional removed (mostly) at some point, leaving behind merely innocuous, tiny speckles. The process left behind trivial and very faint hairlines that sweep downward, most noticeably in the obverse right field, but again, this is mentioned only for completeness, as one must look really hard to see anything distracting. And that "forest for the trees" philosophy might make the observer miss out on what is really a darling, lemon-gold early type piece.
