Because quarter-eagles were occasionally produced in quantities of over a million pieces in some years, a mintage of 15-thousand may appear startlingly low, but it is not an atypical emission for pre-Civil War issues, especially for San Francisco. Probing the protected areas with a loupe reveals portions of reflectivity, characteristic of a limited run. However, an incomplete strike and modest rub ensure the loss of some original detail.
