Description: The F. Raphael Collection. Maris 6-C (R.4) incorporates a reverse design referred to as the "pattern reverse" in the Redbook, which in turn is famous for its earlier use on the 1786 Immunis Columbia, the Non Vi Virtute Vici, the Washington Head, and a heraldic eagle die. All those being exceptionally rare, finding a Maris 6-C provides the only practical opportunity to collect this die, since other New Jersey pairings are all much rarer than 6-C. This is a wonderfully smooth, although certainly heavily worn, example that shows very fair contrast between pecan-brown devices and a somewhat dark overall planchet. Despite considerable honest circulation, the all-important additional outline of the shield may still be seen with a loupe.
