Lot Title: 1796 Large Date, Small Letters BB-65 NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 504
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 1 graded MS-61, 9 higher at NGC, although NGC does not break down their census by logotypes as does the Redbook. B-5, BB-65 can be attributed by noting the diagnostic die lump connected to "I" in AMERICA. Mahogany-grey patina dominates the presence for this significantly better mint-state draped-bust dollar, and the obverse displays an intriguing blaze of navy-blue patina in front of and around Liberty's face, with splashes of comparable violet iridescence seen elsewhere across each side. Although any draped-bust dollar is going to show some incompleteness of strike, the present piece can hardly be faulted for technical shortcomings in this sense, as it shows nearly every possible detail within and between individual hair strands, and strong delineation of the eagle's motif. Indeed, the eagle's head and talons on many "chicken" reverses will come weakly struck even on high-grade specimens, but not so this piece. It's a marvelous rendition of Robert Scots's endearing design.
