Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. JR-1 is easily discernible from the only other die-marriage for 1801 by a tiny spine that projects up off the right corner of the shield on the reverse. Tiny raised areas scattered across the obverse side are characteristic of the date because the obverse die had die-pits when used to strike both varieties. Either side is pleasantly detailed for this particular example, readily satisfying the requirements of the AU grade, since only slight wear shows within the hair tresses. The reverse still retains complete shield lines, at least to the extent that they were brought up by the dies, and a trace of satiny luster persists between the peripheral devices.
