Lot Title: 1798/97 16 Stars Reverse PCGS MS-63
Lot Number: 347
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 6 graded MS-63, 10 higher at PCGS. JR-1 gets its own listing as a die-variety in the Redbook, bringing together the 1798/7 obverse die with a sixteen star reverse. Indeed, each of the known die-marriages for 1798 gets individual attention in the Redbook mostly due to the count of stars, which varied due to the admission of new states to the original union..

The reverse shows pleasing evidence of strike-doubling, as the top border of the left (observed) wing, but this should not be confused with the tiny extra points seen on most of the stars in the field; the reverse die was cut this way. Delightful frosty grey luster unexpectedly shimmers from each side (unexpected simply because early dimes are so seldom seen in such high grade), and only some isolated, tiny, random hairline contact would seem to preclude an even higher grade, as there are no blunt ticks or marks of consequence.
