Lot Title: 1872 J-1205 Silver Dollar PCGS PR-58
Lot Number: 330
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Judd-1205, William Barber's acclaimed "Amazonian" creation was struck in quarter, half-dollar and the present dollar denominations. All are very rare, and also popular, being considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing of all U.S. designs. The term "Amazonian" has been attributed to the catalog of the Lorin G. Parmelee Collection, sold in 1890.

PCGS acclaims the grade for this example at only AU-58, which is a bit unusual for a pattern that was never technically intended for circulation. However, many have seen light use as so-called "pocket pieces", and judging by the quantity of exceedingly small oblong abrasions, that seems to be a very likely explanation for the "wear" that ascertains the coin's grade. Faintly glossy surface character suggests past efforts to maintain the "new" appearance, as the coin bears up with stark white presence. Aside from some modestly frosty texture within the lines of the shield, only superfluous proof character would be associated with the overall brilliant appearance.
