Lot Title: 1864 J-356B Cent NGC MS-66
Lot Number: 329
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Judd-356b (R.8) was struck using standard dies for the 1864 dies (no "L" designer's initial), but used the preceding thicker copper-nickel planchet instead of the new bronze planchets. These are extremely rare "patterns", with so few pieces known that individual coins may usually be identified merely by the presence and location of faint carbon spots, but this specific example, housed in a prior-generation NGC holder, does not appear to have been offered on the market in recent years. The slab spells out the specific metallic content as 87%CU, 13%NI at a weight of 2.8 grams, and is astutely given a circulation strike grade of MS-66. An intriguing and somewhat mysterious coin that deserves placement within a highly specialized collection.
