Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. BD-1 uses the "tall 5" in the denomination, which is sufficient to distinguish it from BD-2. Considerable eye-appeal incorporates outstanding, frosty yellow-gold color that takes full advantage of intense underlying luster. At first glance, upgrade consideration would seem warranted, although closer inspection reveals quite a few subtle ticks and contact marks sprinkled throughout. For such an early production type, the strike was surprisingly precise, with the scroll on the reverse fully rendered from end to end. Even the eagle's talons nearly reach fully definition, and every obverse star was fully pushed up by the strike. Faint orange toning digs into a couple of digits in the date, and we note additional splashes of ruby-gold toward the extreme right wide of the reverse. Here also, a trivial hairline scratch rests next to "MER".
