Lot Title: 1805 PCGS AU-53 CACCAC
Lot Number: 386
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 15,600. 1 graded AU-53, 6 higher at PCGS. LM-1 is of course the only pair of dies used to strike 1805 half-dimes. The celebrated Pittman specimen probably qualifies as a condition-census piece, and the PCGS population report supports that postulation. Thick bronze-grey patina dominates the coin with vintage appeal, and shows occasional flashes of honey-gold and lavender iridescence within protected areas of flowline luster. As the final emission of the draped-bust design, 1805 half-dimes seldom possess strong detail, and even this exquisite piece shows shallow definition at Liberty's bust, but the only other detractions worthy of note are a few brief, old hairline scratches on the portrait, now well-toned along with the rest of the coin.
