Lot Title: 1797 13 Stars PCGS XF-40
Lot Number: 384
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 44,527. 4 graded XF-40, 8 higher at PCGS. LM-4 (R.6) can be attributed by counting the thirteen stars on the obverse which qualify this as by far the rarest die-marriage for 1797. Indeed, fewer than thirty in every grade have ever been certified at PCGS, discounting resubmissions. Glowing molten-gold color emanates from the obverse left field and adjoins the magenta-grey toning that otherwise predominates. Each side shows any number of the delicate circulation hairlines expected of diminutive early silver coins, but the only contact mark appears to be a teardrop shaped dig in the fields adjacent to Liberty's nose. Remarkably, some original mint luster has been preserved within protected areas in the periphery of the reverse.
