Lot Title: 1793 Chain Periods PCGS AU-55
Lot Number: 144
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Sheldon-4 has a period following the date and LIBERTY, and in this die-state, the obverse die-crack that extends left from the date has not quite fully evolved. An amazing MS-66 example has been certified for Sheldon-4, but for those who do not wish to spend well in excess of two-million dollars on THAT coin, perhaps a nicer AU-55 example will suffice. The reverse shows immaculate velvet-brown patina that incorporates delightful flowline luster extending completely through the fields. Indeed, it is no stretch to say that this side could qualify for a commercial mint-state assessment. An unmistakable planchet flaw enters the portrait at the nose and exits the back of Liberty's head as it maneuvers into the field just left of LIBERTY. But since the entire coin enjoys such lovely, deep natural color, it has only limited impact on eye-appeal, and perhaps adds to the charm of the limited technical capabilities of the early mint. At any rate, the coin has been almost flawlessly preserved for a lightly circulated survivor, completely lacking any of the granularity almost always associated with the type. An unchallenged highlight of today's auction.
