Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1829 BD-1 NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 250
Description: Bass-Dannreuther-1 per NGC, which equates to a "large date" logotype on the obverse. "9" in the date appears noticeably larger than the neighboring "2' and lies right of the curl above and on the reverse, "I" in the motto is just right of center of the "T" above. Although often seen as a capped bust type of the dates 1821 - 1834, in actuality, the 1829 (through 1834) is a distinct subtype, as the later dates were struck with a closed collar, resulting in uniform diameters and more consistently accurate striking details.

This mint-state example remains unexpectedly clean for the grade of only MS-61, showing hardly any noticeable contact marks despite reflectivity in the fields. Just enough texture layers the central portraits that there is some perceptible cameo effect despite the coin not qualifying for a special designation. The cataloger would contend that what appears to be a series of hairlines down the portrait are actually adjustment marks, and a brief patch of improper alloy shows between the third and fourth stars, helping identify the coin to future observers.
