Lot Title: 1871 NGC MS-67 CACCAC
Lot Number: 803
Description: The single finest known example in circulation-strike format at NGC. PCGS has never graded an example above MS-66+. While 1871 is a common date at essentially all grades, when one encounters a properly graded superb gem, then the idea of "common" goes out the window. A coin considered the "finest known" cannot be rationalized in terms of availability except to say that they are seldom-to-never available. Along with top accolades at NGC, CAC agrees the coin to be at the top of the grade's caliber as well.

First and foremost as is so often the case, it is the sun-dazzling luster that draws in the eye and beckons further inspection. Thereupon, the fields show no flaws at all, and when a tiny mark on the neck is the largest possible distraction, then one knows the coin will be of first-rate quality. A light whisper of almond-grey layers over the surface and permits that dizzying array of luster bands to swing around unimpeded. The dies both had cracks, seen at the base of the date and through the ends of the arrowheads, yet they still imparted a phenomenally thorough strike to the entire flan. One of the best examples the cataloger has ever seen across ALL dates in the series, and an obvious Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award winner.
