Lot Title: 1825 NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 276
Description: Jody Harrison Collection. Bass-Dannreuther-2. 11 graded MS-61, 16 higher at NGC. Final digit "5" in the date rests low within the field, while on the reverse, the end of the stem centers precisely over the left side of "D" in the denomination. Both die-marriages for 1825 share a common reverse, but BD-1 is a very rare variety compared to the present BD-2. A curious observation is that as a date, the 1825 appears to be the most commonly available "open collar" subtype, and furthermore, most seen fall within upper grade tiers (i.e. near mint-state and higher).

The low mintage of 4434 pieces greatly increases the likelihood of prooflike character, and the fields present a delightful hint of reflectivity, albeit visual dynamics have become modestly compromised by a plethora of delicate hairlines. While it would never be mistaken as a specimen today, this coin may have been treated as such in years past and thereby been lovingly (if mistakenly) wiped so as to ward off so-called tarnish. Now, attractive, mellow royal golden tones sweep the surface yet still permit flashy presence, augmented by faintly textured devices.
