Lot Title: 1864 Copper-Nickel NGC PR-66 CAMEO
Lot Number: 857
Description: Dabble Collection. 8 graded PR-66 CAM, 4 higher at NGC. The traditional proof sets of 1864 were intended to include an example of the copper/nickel 1-cent piece, as these were the first struck of the type (later in the year, the switch to bronze planchets precipitated a famous proof rarity within the series). Regardless of strike format, proof examples of the 1864 cent that possess enough field-to-device contrast to earn a "cameo" designation are extremely elusive and worthy of attention. A good, white light instantly reveals exceptional contrast, especially on the obverse, of this exceptional small cent. The flame-orange patina appears utterly original and promotes the obverse contrast, while the reverse, doused in glinting lilac-grey, serves up not quite as much of the cameo effect. Extremely sharp details all the way around have been carefully preserved through proper handling, and a trio of irregular abrasions at the obverse center appear to be pre-striking planchet anomalies.
