Lot Title: 1820 Large Date, Square 2 No Knob NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 632
Description: Nicholas Jackson Collection. Overton-108, "square base 2, no knob". The fifth star has been recut and even more obvious, on the reverse, the three lower olive branches show bold doubling. Some sources claim that 1820 is the second most difficult capped-bust half-dollar when collecting by date only, but the cataloger suspects the apparent elusiveness as a date is due more to Dansco album collectors, who must fill no fewer than five holes -- the most of any entry. A flimsy layer of olive-bronze layers this example and does not in any way impede considerable windmilling energy that flows from either side. An excellent strike plus a near completely lack of marks adds up to an outstanding example for the seemingly low grade of MS-61.
