Lot Title: 1815/2 O-101 PCGS AU-58
Lot Number: 617
Description: Dabble Collection. Overton-101, and nearly die-state "a" even if the peripheral die crack on the reverse has not formed yet. The strong die clashes for which 1815/2 is (also) famous blatantly show on either side, with the confusion of clashed detail beneath the eagle's wings and in between the vertical shield lines particularly bold. Of course, collectors seldom care about the die state for 1815/2 as the key status that the date enjoys places it on every early half-dollar collectors punch list. Toning adds greatly to the magnificent, original allure of this near-mint example. Exceptionally deep, dusky lavender-grey thoroughly endows the obverse aside from subtle rose highlights on the touch-friction areas. The reverse oversees notably vibrant chartreuse-grey with deep ocean blue lowlights inside of the fields. With regard to complaints, a thin old scratch descends down the right side of the shield but has become fully blended into the patina over the course of two centuries. An additional hairline on Liberty's bust represents the only other sign of handling.
