Lot Number: 616
Description: Nicholas Jackson Collection. Overton-101, the prime die-state immediately recognizable by doubly clashed dies, yet lacking a peripheral die crack on the reverse. Indeed, the cataloger could find no trace whatsoever of this crack on the reverse. NGC merely lists "1815" on the slab, but of course, all are actually 1815/2 overdates. Casual collectors many not realize that numerous Overton die-marriages are much rarer than the 1815/2 as a date, but the single die-marriage must pull double-duty, to satisfy both serious collectors who purse an example of every known variety as well as series collectors who merely want an example from every year struck, with the latter group particularly demanding. An almost trivial layer of golden-grey has settled upon the surface but the coin faces up as very nearly fully untoned, and most definitely lustrous, since substantial remnants of cartwheel luster still illuminate the periphery. The reverse especially retains plenty of frosty, cartwheeling effect. As one might expect of the earlier strike off these dies, the details are unexpectedly sharp and still well preserved in spite of modest overall rub. A single jagged abrasion attaches to the top of the eagle's head and another brief scrape rests left of "1" in the date, but these seem to be the only notable intrusions.
