Description: The Blackhawk Collection. "Open A Reverse". There is no provenance indicated, but the remarkably evenness of the color and the slightly glossy texture are highly suggestive of an S.S. Central America survivor. Without that source of representatives, the 1854-S would remain very rare, although AU examples -- still highly elusive -- have at least become approachable with the dispersal of shipwreck recoveries. For only AU-53, both sides still display an unexpected level of whirling cartwheel luster. Frosted satiny texture remains intact within protected, low lying areas of the design while the highpoints have taken the brunt of seven points of wear. Broad, flat areas on various curls result from modest wear, as does the presence of quite a few pocket abrasions. Struck off of a reverse die starting to show bold cracks over to the left.
