Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1873-CC PCGS AU-50 (green label) CACCAC
Lot Number: 377
Description: Sheffield Collection. Mintage: 22,410. 46 graded AU-50, 159 higher at PCGS. Repeated resubmissions seemingly have inflated population reports to the extent that they cannot be blatantly quoted, a philosophy that can be stated for all of the low-mintage Carson City twenties (well, for any low-mintage key coin, actually). Suffice it to say that the 1873-CC very seldom shows up in dealer cases at grades above XF, and this is a superior AU-50 in an older holder that has preserved the very pleasant, vintage appearance of a charming example. Traces of ruby-gold reside within the protected areas and a subtle copper spot adheres to the base of the portrait. Additional, comparable copper spots also appear on the reverse, where the most telling abrasion up and right of the eagle's head also appears. Ample luster confirms the excellent collectability of this difficult double-eagle.
