Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1879-CC PCGS XF-45
Lot Number: 334
Description: Sheffield Collection. Mintage: 1762. 14 graded XF-45, 18 higher at PCGS. Famous as the nadir for mintages of gold eagles out of Carson City, even the rarer and more valuable 1870-CC started out with a mintage three times higher. Severe attrition is the factor that makes rare so many of the Nevada tens (and twenties). Given the bold overall design elements that remain even after fifteen points of wear, one might surmise that this was a fairly well struck example, and possibly started out a bit flashy, based on texture within protected areas. Truth be told, the obverse shows fewer abrasions than one usually expects of the date, with a majority of intrusions making it over to the less important reverse. Pinkish-orange rub on the highpoints confirms the extent of wear.
