Lot Title: 1867 ten-coin Proof Set (no w/ rays nickel), all PCGS
Lot Number: 892
Description: Michael Scott Collection. Perhaps as many as 625 proof "sets" were issued for 1867, but that is possible only if one ignores the extremely rare and highly coveted "with rays" reverse (not included here). From lowest denomination on, this remarkable set was certified by PCGS in consecutive holds, and is comprised of the following: cent (PR-64 RB, substantial woodgrain effect and about equal parts red and brown), 2-cent (PR-64 RB, two-thirds brown with remarkably consistent and attractive patina), 3-cent nickel (PR-63, reasonably bright but hazy and modestly hairlined), 3-cent silver (PR-63, smoke and grey-blue toning), 5-cent "no rays" (PR-62, somewhat chalking from hairlines and showing some baffling, waxy whitish residue), half-dime (PR-62, a bit abraded but showing nicer ocean-blue rim toning), dime (PR-63, blue-grey toning overall and some hairlines), quarter (PR-63, hairlined and retoned in blue-grey much like the prior two silver pieces), half-dollar (PR-63, cinnamon-gold outlines the devices and joins with the usual grey-blue peripheral color), and silver dollar (PR-63, modest cameo and somewhat bright despite yet more bluish-grey toning, and not as hairlined as expected). It's impossible to determine whether these comprise a true, original set but based upon the consistent appearance, especially of the silver pieces, one can easily guess the coins have been together for a very long time. Ten coin lot.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
