Here is an American Revolutionary War Financing certificate, dated July 31, 1780 and issued by the United States Quartermaster General. It was printed in Philadelphia by Francis Bailey, and boasts low serial number 34. This exceedingly rare example of Revolutionary War Financing scripophily has been documented in the reference book "THE PRICE OF LIBERTY - The Public Debt of the American Revolution" by William Anderson, and displays well-preserved paper stock showing minor creases, light original staining on the back, and beautiful penmanship. Fully executed and issued financial as an instrument of debt, it specifies:

"No. 34 - CERTIFICATE for 266 2/3 Dollars. --- I DO hereby Certify, that the UNITED STATES are indebted to Peter Witmor --- in the Sum of Two Hundred and Sixty Six 2/3 in Dollars, being for Services by him Performed in the Quarter Master Gen. dept. --- which Sum by Contract became due to the Said Peter Witmor --- the Fourteenth day of February Last --- Given under my Hand at Easton in the State of Pennsylvania the thirty first day of July -- A.D. 1780 -- (100 Pounds) --- (Signed) Cornelius Cop DQMG (Deputy Quartermaster General)".
