Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1859-D PCGS Genuine (AU details/cleaned)
Lot Number: 221
Description: Mintage: 2244. The finest 1859-D seen by the cataloger rests in an NGC MS-62 slab, and it is tied with seven other pieces in that grade. What makes that coin so special is its strike, which was not absolutely complete due to the mint of origin, but is much better than average for the date. The same holds true for this allegedly impaired "UNC details" example, which features a distinguishable split between the curling ribbons below Liberty's ear, as well as a virtually full complement of feathers on the reverse. Cleaning indicated by "code 92" on the PCGS slab insert cannot be denied, but truly, there are not very many hairlines visible, and the color has developed surprising depth of hue after such an infraction.
