Lot Title: 1795 Jefferson Head, Plain Edge PCGS VF-25
Lot Number: 547
Description: Zodiac Consignment. Sheldon-80, plain edge. The mysterious "Jefferson Head" cents dated 1795. For copper collectors, the known population of Jefferson Head large-cents has been widely studied and researched. Thereby, only thirty-plus examples or so are known to exist. Of course, these enigmatic coppers were not an official mint product even if they are collected right beside Liberty Cap large-cents of contemporary production. Rather, they were minted by New Jersey mechanic and saw-maker John Harper, who struck them as part of his effort to gain a coinage contract from the Federal government. They must have been placed into circulation in the 1790s, then withdrawn much later when all large copper pieces (half-cents and large-cents) were retracted from circulation to be replaced by the new "small cents" in the 1850s.

Generally, the surface has evaded most contact marks, except for a minor tick at 1:00 of the obverse. The fields display granularity and that probably was the case at some point for the details as well, except that circulation has lovingly smoothed over the highpoints of the motifs on either side. Now, the lower relief portions of the planchet face up with dark ebony-olive color, while modestly lighter mahogany hue adheres to the smoother portions, creating a three-dimensional presentation slightly nicer than expected of a "VF-25" grade. (For a coin of non-Federal origin, with no specimen strikings or mint-state pieces in existence for comparison, there is no telling how PCGS arrived at a grade of such pinpoint exactitude. After all, the finest known example has been burnished and would be deemed "ungradable"... but let's just run with it.) All of the obverse legends were placed nicely upon the flan due to a well-centered strike, and on the reverse, the tops of ITED STATES OF are very close to the edge, merging slightly.
