Lot Title: (1792) Undated, WASHINGTON BORN VIRGINIA, Eagle With 13 Stars Reverse, PCGS AU-53
Lot Number: 540
Description: Zodiac Consignment. Baker-22M. PCGS offers a grade of AU-53, but a grade with that much "precision" seems to be unnecessarily (and unrealistically) splitting hairs for a numismatic item of which only three are known to exist. Suffice it to say that this is considered the finest of the known pieces by a large margin. Seemingly , ether side displays almost all of the details intended for production, with evenly distributed, light wear showing throughout (not from circulation, of course, but from handling).

As alluded, with a known population of only three pieces, this is one of the greatest rarities in all of Washingtoniana -- indeed, in all of U.S. numismatics. This actual example was sold prior in 2006, and before that, none was offered publicly for sale for 55 years. The obverse legends state GEO. WASHINGTON BORN VIRGINIA FEB.11.1732, surrounding a portrait of the great American. On the reverse, an heraldic eagle occupies nearly the entire field, clutching an olive branch in the left (observed) talon, and arrows in the right. Twelve stars arc over the eagle's head, aligned with the rim and with a thirteenth below. The likeness of the President matches that seen for contemporary medals and minted pieces remarkably well.

Dark, glossy chocolate-brown dominates the appearance, just as one would expect of such an example when it retains original surfaces. Some trivial surface roughness may be seen within portions of the periphery, most prominently displayed between 7:00 and 9:00. An array of utterly trivial, random ticks show, including an oblong nick on the second vertical stripe of the shield, and an unimportant, old pin scratch beneath the olive branch has toned completely over. The rims have generally escaped noticeable contact, aside from a slight rim bump above "B" of FEB on the reverse.
