Description: Zodiac Consignment. Standish Barry was a clock smith, watchmaker and silversmith in Baltimore who struck his own coinage, including a small number of three-pence pieces dated "JULY 4 90". In this regard, they are comparable to the better-known Chalmers tokens, except that the date included leads to the inescapable conclusion that they were struck to commemorate the date of Independence Day. It is also easy to conclude that these served as merchant tokens, advertising Barry's services in "Baltimore Town". According to the Redbook (in turn citing a Max Spiegel reference), the obverse may be that of James Calhoun, active in Baltimore politics in the 1790s.

For a privately minted coin such as this, other pieces exist for comparison and it appears these were struck on relatively crude planchets. That being said, the planchet prepared for this superb example was reasonably round with no obvious edge intrusions. The saw tooth dentils completely surround both sides, albeit with some struck a bit off the planchet more-or-less due to inevitable variation in planchet radius. One can assume the details are strongly struck but there are no "specimen" or proof strikings available for comparison. Light silvery-grey patina dominates, with some lighter, frosty texture visible within the fields and recessed areas. Both dies were already cracked upon production, and it is too bad an earlier strike in high grade isn't available for comparison.
