Lot Title: 1911-D PCGS MS-63
Lot Number: 242
Description: Stiffarm Collection. 41 graded MS-63, 22 higher at PCGS. Mention "1911-D" to a gold collector and instantly, the quarter-eagle and half-eagle come to mind as keys to their respective series. For the gold eagle, the statistics speak for themselves as the date is practically unheard-of even above just the "choice" level. Five "stoppers" exist within the series, and 1911-D is one of them.

Compared to expectations of MS-63 (for the series), this appears to be a highly appealing example. Neither side has become heavily abraded at all, and the only noticeable contact on the obverse seems to be a tiny scramble toward the extreme left, and a lengthy hairline abrasion descending down the same field. This is a risky description, as it truly appears as a superficial hairline under even close examination, and looks like a toning streak under most all viewing angles. On top of everything else, this is a very well struck example that features all of the eagle's feathers even at his shoulder, as well as completely delineated veining within the Indian maiden's headdress.
