Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1868 three-cent J-616 NGC PR-65 BN
Lot Number: 327
Description: Judd-616. The obverse die is identical to the design of that already in use for striking of nickel 3-cent pieces. The reverse design incorporates a wreath highly reminiscent of that used on earlier Indian cents, with smooth verticals in the Roman numeral III. One might surmise that the mint was investigating an alternative to the striped Roman numeral then in use, as the dies often wore quickly enough that the vertical lines could not be fully struck on the hard nickel planchets. A nearly sensational, fully brown specimen struck in copper with a plain edge, the present example is every bit the gem that NGC has assessed. Gorgeous Hershey color dominates the obverse with very subtle pecan accents, and some additional pecan stripes filter over to the reverse.
