Description:	The S.S. Republic was originally the "S.S. Tennessee" when she launched in 1853, and renamed the C.S.S. Tennessee when the Confederacy seized her from the port of New Orleans in 1861. By 1864, she had been captured by the Union and renamed, again, as the "U.S.S. Mobile" until the end of her useful wartime service, after which the ship was sold at auction in March, 1865 and renamed yet again, this time as the "S.S. Republic". Her sinking near the end of October, 1865 resulted eventually in the loss of her treasure of $400,000 in coins (mostly gold $10 and $20) and several souls. A pair of recovered 1861-O half-dollars bear one with UNC details ascribed by NGC, and another also with UNC details per the cataloger's estimate, joined by an 1861 (P) issue with AU details, per the cataloger's estimate. All carry a "shipwreck effect" disclaimer according to NGC. Three coin lot.
