Description: Gemini. 1 graded MS-66+, zero higher at NGC. The best seen by PCGS is MS-66 (no +), which would imply that this is the finest known of all 1828 capped-bust half-dollars by a mere smidgeon. Overton-115 features a lot of verbiage as a Redbook variety, including the square base "2", small 8s in the date, and the large letters of the reverse. Refining attribution, the specialist will note multiple linear die defects that connect the left end of the scroll (below "E") with the top of the eagle's left (observed) wing, and this brings final resolution to this intriguing die-marriage. The cataloger further notes a fine die crack that connects the base of all the letters in UNITED, and elevates gradually through STATES, terminating at the rim above the final "S".

Jaw-dropping eye-appeal is hands-down the hallmark characteristic of this superb Gem, beginning first with the exceedingly sharp details brought up by the dies, including thread-like precision sharpness of the cascading tresses. A fully raised circle delineates the eagle's eye, an unusual accomplishment for any bust half-dollar. Sensational luster twirls around either side, and progresses madly from the portrait all the way to the rim outside the stars of the obverse, and rides ride through the peripheral lettering on the reverse. One simply does not see such a well struck bust half every day. Shimmering honey-gold shades the entire surface, relieved in areas by pastel lavender and royal gold accents.
