Description: Gemini. Section one of the Coinage Act of 1792 reads: "Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, and it is hereby enacted and declared, That a Mint for the purpose of a national coinage be, and the same is established." This 1792 half disme is the result of that legislation and is one of two coins that is widely considered the kings of American coins (the other being the famous 1804 dollar). While stories of Martha Washington's silver being used to create these coins are likely apocryphal, there is no denying the strong collector demand for the first official coin from the United States. The current example graded PCGS VF-25 Laminated Planchet Obv. Mint Error should excite any serious numismatist, as finding examples without cleaning or damage is near impossible. A great strike results in amazing hair detail for the grade along with a very well defined date. Even wear on both sides still shows all the design elements clearly. With perfect color and no major post-mint distractions, this coin is one hundred percent wholesome and original. The only distraction, if one can call it that, is a rather extensive planchet lamination error across the obverse portrait. This is a mint-made error, as the PCGS insert accurately describes, and only ads to the uniqueness and appeal of this classic American rarity that is destined for one of the greatest collections. It is not often that an infamous piece of American history is made available so be prepared to bid liberally (ls).
