Lot Title: 1856-S Split Serif PCGS AU-58 S.S. Central America
Lot Number: 278
Description: J.P. Estate Consignment. 40 in AU-58 and only 39 higher for the variety at PCGS. Type one $20 gold is always scarce in higher grades, but thanks to the recovery of coins from the S.S. Central America, examples do show up on occasion. This stunning 1856-S in PCGS AU-58 is a coin whose eye appeal far exceeds its assigned grade. With semi-prooflike surfaces and minimal marks, this recovered treasure from the seas will make a wonderful addition to a type or gold set. The Split Serif variety is also noted on the PCGS special gold label, and it is worth nothing that a mere 40 coins of that variety have been graded AU-58 and only 39 higher. Expect spirited bidding when this coin crosses the auction block (ls).
