Lot Title: Kellogg & Humbert Assayers 38.67ozs .913 Fine Gold Bar, S.S. Central America Recovery
Lot Number: 1012
Description: Live floor bidding on this lot will begin at 8:03pm cdt on July 27th.

APPROXIMATE DIMENSIONS: 3-7/8 x 1-3/4 x 5/8 inches. TESTED WEIGHT: 38.615 troy ounces. OBVERSE FACE: No 694 / KELLOGG / & / HUMBERT / ASSAYERS within rectangular border / 38.67 OZ/ 931 fine /$729.83. REVERSE FACE: 694. All other faces plain. The assayer has taken a large triangular extraction from the lower right corner of the front, and another on the lower left corner of the back. The shape and heft are a treasure seeker's dream, as this ingot has much the appearance of what one imagines when thoughts turn to the crude, yet practical methods by which gold ingots were created for transport in the mid-1800s. The ingot is about twice as long as it is wide and little more than half an inch thick, and the purity is remarkably high for a bar of this type, exceeding the fineness of minted American gold coins (which were only .900 fine by 1857). Aesthetics can be important for a bar of these dimensions, and it appears the primary data are stamped at near-regular intervals, leading the cataloger to surmise that the stamp of KELLOGG & HUMBERT ASSAYERS was strategically placed into the widest available spacing between the first two lines. The high purity of the precious metal content leads to a brilliant surface, conserved of course, yet very attractive with slight greyish mellowing near the center of the obverse. The reverse has become a bit convex due to how the molten gold was poured into and subsequently cooled within the mold.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
