Lot Title: 1797 9X7 Stars, Large Letters PCGS AU-53

Description: Bolender-1, BB-73, a Redbook variety, has the same obverse star arrangement as B-2, with nine left and seven right, but on the reverse, a leaf points directly between "CA", whereas it points at the left serif of the final "A" on B-2. In the PCGS AU-53 grade, die attributes are easy to view, and the Bolender reference denotes die-state "d" as having over twenty die cracks visible. Without actually counting, one can find numerous cracks for the present specimen, but the Bowers reference describes at least one later state, so we can settle the argument by calling die-state "c".

Given the unstable dies, definition varies a bit over each side, with the obverse lower right area noticeably sunken in and weakly detailed compared to other areas. That said, significant luster embraces the fields outside the stars, and the reverse displays some semblance of cartwheel action. The entire coin has become bathed in slightly brilliant silvery-grey patina, and shows a light touch of golden peripheral color on the reverse. No signs of contact need be mentioned for either side.
