Lot Title: 1896-S PCGS AU-50
Lot Number: 770
Description: Shop Talk Collection. 10 graded AU-50, 50 higher at PCGS. A member of the esteemed "big three" key dates within the Barber quarter series, the 1896-S has a higher mintage than the 1901-S and 1913-S, but also had more time to circulate, helping to explain its excessive scarcity in grades above very-good. AU examples are particularly elusive, since remarkably, fewer exist within the about-uncirculated grade range than at the mint-state level. Remaining details for this example are particularly sharp for the grade, and on their own, appear to qualify for AU-53 or so, but PCGS probably noted the subdued nature of the inherent luster, and assessed accordingly. Still, the visual impact gains a bit from the presence of occasional sprinkles of indigo-blue and magenta-jade near the borders. Not a single contact mark warrants individual notice; indeed, the reverse seems unexpectedly free from handling, given ten points of circulation.
