Lot Title: 1796/5, Small Eagle NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 217
Description: Papa's Collection. Three graded MS-61, eleven higher at NGC, discounting presumed resubmissions. From our July 2015 auction, lot 952. BD-1 is the only die-marriage used to strike this overdated issue in the early half-eagle series. As is very common for gold coins struck at the fledgling mint, which had to meet precise weight requirements (within the tolerance of weighing procedures on the mint floor), adjustment marks almost always accompany, and in this case, a number of light striations project upward on the portrait -- certainly more limited in nature compared to some heavily adjusted examples seen. Even, consistent canary-gold patina thoroughly dominates the presentation, gently illuminated by slightly reflective underlying luster. As expected of the MS-61 grade, a number of small, random abrasions determine the grade, scattered into the obverse right field along with wispy brief hairlines. A curling strikethrough just on the throat could be used as a pedigree marker for future reference. An exceptional opportunity, and one of the finest offerings in today's auction (Scotia described).
