Lot Title: 1797 Large Eagle NGC AU-58
Lot Number: 817
Description: Bass-Dannreuther-4 shows a die-crack through the final digit of the date, and on the reverse, a leaf points between the space at the base of "RI". The charming design for the early ten-dollar gold pieces appeals to collectors of every ilk, although the corresponding value, especially at the elevated AU-58 grade, will prove daunting to many. Nevertheless, one can readily behold and appreciate the inestimable quality offered here for the near-mint state preservation. While the entire surface displays expected matte texture in the fields due to friction from simple handling, protected flat areas between the stars and LIBERTY retain meaningful reflective nuances. Such flashy reflectivity is even more noticeable on the reverse, especially in the starry field and between the stripes of the shield.

As-struck characteristics for this particular specimen include a hook-shaped strike through just up and left of the twelfth star, while to the minter’s credit, we can find no evidence of the adjustment marks that always seem to accompany large, early gold pieces. A marvelous survivor from an early production run of only 10,940 pieces.
