Lot #: Go
Lot Title: Ancient Greece - 120-63-BC AV Stater - Pontic Kingdom NGC AU
Lot Number: 78
Description: Obv: diademed bust of Alexander facing right, horn of Ammon. Rev: Athena enthroned facing left, holding Nike. Pleasing brilliantish gold color justifies NGC's "4" grade for surface, with the obverse tightly bound as usual by the slightly smallish size of the flan but also rather well centered. Centering of the reverse favors the right side although the legends are practically complete. Mithradates provided a rare threat to the late republic through his victories over the Roman armies in three wars, but was eventually thrown back from Pontus by Pompey the Great.
